Weight Loss: Make Your Efforts Fruitful

By Shana Gretzler

Whether you are trying to impress somebody or boost your own self confidence, losing weight can be a good choice if you're carrying a few extra pounds. However, where do you start? Weight loss is a very personal process, so you may have to try a few things to see what sticks. This article will outline a few steps that you can take on your path to weight loss.

When you are trying to shed the pounds, avoid temptation. Do not buy anything for your pantry that has the potential to tempt you away from your goals. Skip all of the sugary snack type food. Instead, fill your cupboards with all of your favorite fruits and vegetables. You can indulge on fresh fruit and vegetables and feel no guilt.

If you want to control your weight, make sure that you are getting enough sleep. When you get enough sleep, the hormones that regulate your appetite are in balance. However, when you do not get enough sleep, these hormones are out of balance, causing you to overeat. Lack of sleep also slows down your metabolism, which will interfere with your weight loss.

In order to lose weight, you should be active for at least 30 minutes a day. This is a good start for those who are inactive. The exercise does not need to be strenuous, just enough to get you up and moving. You will feel better, digest your food better and have more energy.

Track your calories. Go buy a cheap spiral notebook. By creating a food journal, you can help to organize all of the foods that you consume. Do not forget to include the number of servings and amount of calories from the food that you eat during the day. This is a simple and effective way to monitor what you eat and the progress you are making.

When you're cleaning your house, why not clean your kitchen of unhealthy foods as well? Take the time to go through your cupboards, fridge and pantry and toss out all the cookies, chips and other junk food that you have sitting around. If they're not there to tempt you, you'll be more likely to eat a healthy diet.

Stop thinking about losing weight. In other words, give yourself time to think about something else, and to spend your leisure time doing something other than exercise. Everyone needs a break sometimes, and taking time off to forget that you are trying to lose weight will give you time to regroup and rest for a while.

To keep your weight loss routine healthy and effective, avoid extreme or "crash" dieting. The ideal diet for healthy weight loss is a sustainable one. By their very natures, crash diets are short-term ordeals. Even though they may offer substantial short-term results, their long-term effect is negligible, or even harmful. It is better to develop a diet you can stick to over time - even permanently.

When losing weight it's important to not deny yourself. If you tell yourself you can't have something, you are going to end up wanting it even more. When that craving hits, only have a bite or two, and see if that causes your craving to pass. If losing weight becomes too complicated, you probably won't stick to it.

An easy way to lose weight is to lower your calorie intake. 3,500 calories equal one pound. Those people who tend to be a little overweight, are consuming more calories then they are burning. If you are eating 1,500 calories a day and burning 1,300 calories a day, you will have an extra 200 calories you are putting into your body every day and over about 18 days, you will have gained a pound.

As you can see, weight loss doesn't need to be a drastic, grueling, and miserable process. With small, measured steps and lifestyle changes, you can make serious progress gradually. Building a knowledge of your body and healthy ways to combat excess pounds is your first step to making a better life!
