Have You Been Unknowingly Undermining Your Diet?

By Lindsay Parker

We all know that the best foods for our weight loss plans are lean meats, whole grains and healthy fats. These food items load us with protein and energy. They keep our bodies nutritionally healthy with minimal calories while we work hard to burn off our fat at the gym. Did you know though that a few of the diet foods you've been eating may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They might even be trying to keep you from losing weight altogether! Here are some of the foods that you might be consuming which are hurting your efforts to lose weight.

Sports Drinks tend not to truly help you. You have probably been told that your sports drink is the fastest way to replenish your body's electrolyte levels after a workout. Most medical doctors agree, however, that if your exercise session is shorter than ninety minutes, drinking water should be fine. Sports drinks are full of calories and sugar and a bunch of other stuff like artificial flavors and colors that will defeat any of your attempts at eating a natural plus healthy diet. Try sipping some chocolate milk as an alternative. The sugar in chocolate will help your muscles begin to mend themselves and the calcium in the milk will strengthen your bones.

Skip that protein shakes. So many people believe that consuming a protein shake is a good way to halt cravings when it isn't meal time. What you will be actually doing, particularly if the remainder of your diet consists of whole and healthy foods, is helping your body overdose on protein. No matter what other folks think, protein is not stored in the muscles, it is stored in your body as fat. If you've already consumed your daily allotment of protein that day, your system will just keep the extra in your fat cells for later and that won't help you drop pounds or inches.

Pre-packaged deli meat seriously isn't very nutritious at all. You probably are convinced a sandwich that is made out of pre-packaged lean deli meat and whole grain bread is a pretty good lunch. The real truth is that pre-packaged deli meat has a massive amount preservatives and will provide you with about a third of your suggested sodium intake for the day. This will be especially dangerous if you are at risk of contracting heart disease. Instead of getting the pre-packaged material, you need to instead use home cooked poultry or freshly sliced meat from your grocery store's deli counter. Sure these types of options are more expensive but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are all sorts of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, by way of example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your doctor which elements are the best to eat and then follow the directions you are given. If you give consideration and are watchful about what sort of food you let yourself eat, losing weight isn't going to be a terribly big deal.
